Aretha Johnson, 92, of Wellington, died Saturday night, August 9, 2008.
Survivors include: daughter Barbara Hamilton of Wellington; sister Nina Schiefelbusch of Parsons, Kansas; grandchildren Susan Hamilton of Phoenix, Arizona, Robert Hamilton and wife Sharon of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and Jenny LeJuerrne and husband Ken of Wichita; and great-granddaughters Ashley LeJuerrne and Kathryn Hamilton.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Wayman and Hazel Proctor, her husband Gilson ("Swede") Johnson, and brothers Alvin and Harold Proctor.
Aretha was born on October 4, 1915 in South Haven, Kansas and grew up in South Haven where her parents owned and managed Proctor's Grocery for 52 years. She was married on December 24, 1933 to Gilson Johnson, who co-founded Johnson Brothers Oil Field Service in the late 1940's. Aretha was an accomplished student and completed a teaching degree at Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas. During the 1950's she taught school, first at the one-room Slate Creek School located northwest of Wellington, then at Mayfield, where she also taught music.
Aretha was a spirited and energetic woman. She and her husband were a sight to behold on the ballroom dance floor. They also enjoyed fishing, visiting the Corpus Christi, Texas, area numerous times for deep-sea fishing, and also pursuing catfish in the Chikaskia River near Drury, Kansas. She enjoyed traveling, with her last extensive trip occurring at the age of 85. Aretha also loved and had a talent for music – especially the piano. She was an animal lover, with a special affection for her companion Scottie dogs, Chelsea and Pearle Mae. But her deepest love and affection was for her family. Our "Nana" will be deeply missed.
