Arlis Dale Barker, age 75, died on November 8, 2015 at Golden Living Center in Wellington, KS. He was born October 13, 1940 at South Haven, KS the son of Dale and Nina (Creed) Barker.
Arlis attended school in South Haven and was very active in football, basketball, and track. After graduation, Arlis went on to college at Cowley County in Arkansas City. On April 11, 1964 he married Diann Briggs and eventually moved to South Haven, KS. Arlis worked at Beech Aircraft and then went to work for Plessey Welco. After awhile Arlis went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad as a machinist. Arlis worked for them for 15 years and then retired.
Arlis thoroughly enjoyed his two daughters, Dana Diann and Deborah Elaine. He always went to all of their activities and sporting events that they were involved in. They both went fishing with their daddy and occasionally Dana went hand fishing with him.
Arlis was so fortunate to be able to enjoy his grandchildren. The grandsons and Arlis went fishing and hunting. Adam and grandpa started out first and then along came Nathen and Alex. OF course Arlis always played with Ginny and Ashley.
The hobbies Arlis loved the most were hunting, fishing, trapping, and gardening. One of Arlis side jobs was hauling hay. Some days he would haul up to 1,000 bales. When Arlis was in high school he helped Daryl Yearout by milking his cows on the dairy farm.
Now later in his life Arlis had two wonderful great grandchildren who are Makenna age seven and Lance age two. Now in about two weeks there will be a third great grandchild. He was anxiously awaiting her arrival.
Survivors include his wife, Diann Barker of Wellington; daughters, Dana Merrifield (Leo) of South Haven and Deborah Yunker (Richard) of Wellington; brother, Kenneth Barker (Renae) of Wellington; sister, Patricia Strickland of Winfield; five grandchildren, Adam (Sarah), Ashley and Alex Herrington, Virginia "Ginny" and Nathen (Derbey) Yunker; great grandchildren, Makenna Swindler and Lance Herrington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter; brother, Lewis Hubbard; father-in-law, Kenneth Briggs, Sr.; mother-in-law, Virginia Briggs; and grandson, Lance Michael Herrington.
Memorial Services will be held at the United Methodist Church in South Haven on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. Pastor Darren Williams will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Rose Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 from 10:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
Memorials have been established in his name with the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
