Berva Marie Phillips, age 89, long time Wellington resident, passed away Thursday evening, December 18, 2014 at Sumner County Care Center in Wellington. Through the years Berva had worked for the Sumner County Welfare Department for 15 years and was also Office Manager at Cedarview Good Samaritan Center for 15 years.
Berva Marie (Miller) Phillips was born on June 19, 1925 in Erie, KS to Rolla Frank Miller and Beulah Luella (Dunham) Miller. She was a graduate of Baker University.
Berva married Kenneth D. Phillips on April 18, 1948 at the First Methodist Church in Baldwin City, KS. He preceded her in death on February 6, 2008.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, participating in the choir and bell choir at church, playing cards, watching KU basketball and Kansas City Royals baseball games, and loved playing the piano and bingo. Her passion was baking, making cakes, cookies, and rolls. She enjoyed traveling either by air or on foot. She won numerous awards for her service and dedication to the community in various organizations.
She was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts of America, Junior Cosmos Club, and the United Methodist Women. Her hobby was taking care of elderly people and helping them in any way she could.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Kenneth.
Survivors include her two children, David Phillips and his wife Kay of Benbrook, TX and Debra Cristy and her husband Craig of Amarillo, TX; two grandchildren, Sarah Parker and her husband of J.P. of North Richland Hills, TX and Shane Cristy of Amarillo, TX; one great grand daughter, Hannah Moore; three brothers, R. Elvin Miller and his wife Margaret of Lenexa, KS, Cecil Miller and his wife Carol Lee of Overland Park, KS, Jim Miller of Hilton Head, SC; and one sister, Lela Mae Beach of Colorado Springs, CO; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. Pastor Brent Clayton will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Sumner Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, December 22, 2014 from 1:00 – 8:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
A memorial has been established with First United Methodist Church in lieu of flowers. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
