Charles "Charlie" F. Stonehocker passed away Friday afternoon, September 11, 2020. He was born June 4, 1923 in Corbin, Kansas and was the youngest son of Ward and Mildred (Dunham) Stonehocker. He was preceded in death by his parents and Lois Cecil (Arnett) in January, 2013, his wife of 70 years.
Charlie spent all of his early, and relatively quiet, years in the Corbin and Wellington area where he met his wife, Lois. He was inducted into the Army in May of 1943. He and Lois were married July 17, 1943 in San Antonio, TX where he was stationed. Charlie then shipped out for England in April 1944 before his first son, Charles, Jr. was born. From England he participated in the Normandy landings, the Battle of the Bulge where his unit was awarded the Belgian Fourragere, and remained in Germany as part of the Occupation Forces. He returned to a much quieter life with his wife and young son in December 1945.
After the war Charlie worked for the ATSF Railroad until he retired in 1983. Not one to sit still, prior to his retirement he had also worked as a refrigeration repairman for about 40 years. He also drove and maintained Wellington school buses for about 40 years.
Survivors include three sons, Charles Stonehocker, Jr. and wife Joyce of Grand Junction, CO, John Stonehocker and wife Sharon of Catoosa, OK, and Lowell Stonehocker and wife Pam of Saginaw, TX; one daughter, Ann Stagnerand and partner Ann of Arvada, CO; seven grandchildren, Shelley, Shonna, Misty, Troy, Anisa, Brandon and Jeremiah; 12 great grandchildren; and niece, Sherry Wiley and husband Perry of Wellington, KS.
Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at Prairie Lawn Cemetery. Pastor Robert Polvado will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Tom Schwinn Post #90. He will be buried beside his wife of 70 years, Lois Cecil (Arnett) Stonehocker.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 16, 2020 from 1:00 – 7:00 P.M.
