Obituary

Charles Ray Harris, age 84, of Wellington, passed away Saturday morning, January 30, 2016 at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington, KS. Charles began working for the Santa Fe Railroad in 1955 as a switchman and retired in 1987 as a Yard Master.

Charles was born on June 29, 1931 in Wellington, KS to George S. Harris and Hazel Pearl (Myers) Harris.

He married Louise Evelyn Slack on February 6, 1954 in Wellington. She preceded him in death on November 7, 2003.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Louise; two sons, David Harris and Clark Harris; two daughters, Debbie Pilens and Barbara Ann Harris; two brothers, Eddie and Byrl Harris; three sisters, Alice Day, Bonnie Ratley, and Marge Shaddix.

Survivors include his daughter Vickie Mertes and her husband Bill of Wellington; three brothers, Bill Harris of Wellington, George Harris of Texas, and Jack Harris of Wichita; fourteen grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at the First Christian Church on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. Pastor Don Bryant will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Oxford Cemetery in Oxford, KS.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 from 1:00 – 8:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

A memorial has been established with the Wellington Humane Society. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
