Obituary

Christopher Michael Deschaine, age 54, passed away on June 1, 2021 in Wellington, Kansas following a battle with Early Onset Alzheimer's.

Chris was born the son of Terry and Brenda Deschaine on February 13,1967 in Wellington.  He graduated from Wellington High School in 1985, attended the University of Kansas, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1990.

Chris was a gifted artist and began expressing his creativity at a very early age.  He spent countless hours drawing anything and everything.  During his elementary years, he won poster contests and designed family Christmas cards.  His favorite time of year was Halloween.  Every year, he meticulously sketched the family jack-o-lantern design on a piece of paper for his dad to transfer onto a pumpkin.  The Deschaine jack-o-lantern was always the most elaborate, expressive, and imaginative glowing creature in the neighborhood.  His family always took such great pride in displaying this great work of art on their porch for all to see.  Chris went on to endlessly draw masterpieces of his favorite band KISS.  It was no surprise that he captured the expressions and personalities of each band member to a T.  His passion for art and music became intertwined and he poured himself into listening to music (very loudly) and creating pieces of art. Chris and his friends formed their own KISS band.  The keen attention to detail with costumes and makeup was beyond exceptional for such a young group of boys.  Chris went on to draw iconic images from the Wellington community.  He created portraits of the Slate Creek Depot, and the "train" on Harvey street.  He sold these during the Wheat Festival Arts and Crafts Show.  Consequently, many community members probably still have a piece of Chris in their homes somewhere.

Not surprising to anyone, Chris went on to pursue a career as a graphic designer.  Upon graduating from KU, he worked for a design firm in Kansas City, MO.  In 1993, he moved to a high-rise loft near downtown Chicago with a group of college friends.  He started his own design company called Braintrust, which was eventually changed to Deschaine and Associates.  For many years, Chris lived life to the fullest.  He was incredibly proud of his career, which was rapidly growing. Chris had a large circle of friends. He never knew a stranger, and in such a large city, he somehow managed to form friendships everywhere he went and always seemed to run into someone he knew, even in Chicago.

In 2000, Chris was united in marriage to Gabrielle Biernat in Detriot, Michigan.  The two of them went on to have 3 children together.  Chris was a loving husband and wonderful father. In 2007, Chris and his family moved to Grosse Pointe Park, MI, where he continued to work as a graphic designer.  He was able to work, live, and enjoy his family for several years before he was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's.  Eventually Chris moved away from his family to be cared for by his parents in Wellington.  During those years, visits from his children became his lifeline.  He also looked forward to his weekly get-togethers at his cousin Chaney's house.  These were the things that kept him happy in his final years of life.  His passion for music was a blessing during those years as well.  Chris spent all of his waking hours in his "man cave" at his parent's home listening to his vinyl records.  Music was always such an important part of his life and became therapeutic to him up until the end of his life.

Survivors include his children, Dante Emilio, Immaculee Grace, and Rocco Michael Deschaine; parents, Terry and Brenda Deschaine; sister, Traci Ybarra and her husband, Tony Ybarra;

nephews, Nate, Joe and Jay Ybarra; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A celebration of Chris' life is being planned for later in the summer for family and friends in both Kansas City and Detroit.
