IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doris Elizabeth
Barber
January 21, 1920 – November 4, 2019
Doris Elizabeth Barber (Frazier) This amazing woman, was called to join God in heaven Monday, November 04, 2019 at 1:30am. Doris was born January 21, 1920 to Louis Frazier and Georgia L. Polk Frazier at home in Cooter, Mo. She was the first of 2 sisters and 2 brothers that followed. Doris liked to relay that Papa Frazier would take her to school by horseback until her siblings came along, then they had to ride in a wagon. Doris grew up on the Cotton farm, working alongside her family. She put herself through teaching college to become an elementary special needs teacher. Doris met James "Pill" Barber at a dance. She told their children years later that she told Pill she would not dance with him even if he was the last man on earth. They were married a week later. Doris and Pill did many things together including graduating from beautician school, opening and running their own beauty shop for 11 years. All the children helped to build the shop. Doris was giving of herself. She was a lifelong, active member of the Catholic faith. She and Pill dedicated their time to numerous volunteer services. Doris continued volunteering after Pill died in 1989. She added crafting and traveling with who she lovingly called "the widows of Wellington." Family teased Doris that they had to make an appointment just to visit her. Doris remained active up to a week before her death. Never one to draw attention to herself, she was a little apprehensive about the family's planned 100th Birthday party for her in January 2020. Doris is preceded in death by her parents, husband James "Pill" Barber, her daughter Brenda Williams, her brothers Joe and James Frazier, her sister Susan Davis, many friends, family and her dear friend Jim Chisholm and her first husband Chester Brooks who lost his life in WWII. She leaves behind her sister Billie Jones, her children, Melinda Yuengel, Michael Barber, Theresa German and Leasha Hughes; her grandchildren Christine LeRock, Wanda Wilson, Andrew Yuengel, Wendy Deatsch, Stephanie Billingsley, Megan Barber, Sarah Helm and Courtney Daley; and 17 great-grandchildren. Doris was an avid volunteer, giving her time to the Mission Thrift Store, Kiwanis, Futures Unlimited, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Red Hat Club, Harry Hines Hospice, The Wellington Art Center, The Mobile Blood Bank, Sumner Regional Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary, St. Anthony's Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Meals On Wheels, and the 21st Century Learning. Our family would like to thank the wonderful, loving staff at Brookdale in Wellington, as well as Good Shepherd Hospice, Dr. Steven Scheufler and the doctors and nurses of SCMC for their excellent care and compassion.
