Obituary

Douglas Gene Smith, of Wellington, Kansas, passed away on December 14, 2023 at the age of 77.

Doug was born the son of Earnest and Eva Jean (Sullivan) Smith on June 5, 1946 in Hutchinson, Kansas.

When Doug was the age of 5, he and his family moved to Wellington, Kansas and would later achieve his Eagle Scout status in the Boy Scouts. After graduating from Wellington High School, Doug would go on to enlist in the United States Army and would serve his country in the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot and would earn the rank of Captain. Doug was such a military man that he completed Army Ranger training later in his career and was a member of the Big Red 1 Infantry which he was proud of. After his service, Doug went on to own and operate a successful construction company, Home Energy Products. He also enjoyed flying around town with his Power Parachute and rooting for his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys, in his free time.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen Smith; son, Treavor Smith, step-son, Rhett Joy (Jenny), step-daughter, Jennifer Cornejo (Kevin), step-daughter, Jana Brewer (Carl); grandchildren: Ashton Smith (McKenzie), Brenden Smith, Calvin Wilson, William Wilson, Carter Joy, Cole Joy, Macey Spaulding, Lex Joy, Katherine Cornejo, Audrey Cornejo, Colin Bennett (Kelli), Abigale Stull (Tommy), Chance Brewer; great grandchildren: Danny Bennett and Brent Bennett; and brother, Bradley Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Heather Wilson.

Graveside services with military honors for Doug will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 20th, 2023 at Sumner Memorial Gardens, Wellington, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given to the Avenue of Flags, PO Box 245, Wellington, Kansas 67152. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
