Eddie W. Staley, age 92, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away early Saturday morning, November 21, 2009 at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington, KS. He was a mail carrier for 31 years in Wellington and retired in 1978.
Eddie W. Staley was born on October 1, 1917 in Wichita, KS to Charles W. Staley, Sr. and Hattie (Robinson) Staley. He was raised in the Milan, Kansas area.
He served in the 351st Infantry Division of the United States Army during World War II from December 11, 1942 – February 18, 1946. During that time he served as a combat medic on the front lines for 19 months. He saw action in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. During his tour of duty, he received a Purple Heart and a Purple Heart with an oak leaf and a Bronze Star.
He married Donna J. Jones on August 18, 1949 in Wichita, KS. They had celebrated 53 years of marriage before she passed away on June 15, 2003.
Eddie was a member of the American Legion, VFW, NALC (National Association of Letter Carriers) and the DAV (Disabled American Veterans).
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna; two daughters, Diania Lee Staley and Hattie Lynn Staley; and son-in-law, Frank Baker.
Survivors include one son, Edward "Ed" Staley and his wife Nancy of Wellington, KS; three daughters, Jana Allen and her husband Steve, Merry Williams and her husband Bobby, and Deborah Baker and her husband Dick Wilson all of Wellington, KS; one brother, Charles "Buzz" Staley of Wichita, KS; 13 grandchildren, Tim Williams, Charles Staley, Brian Cochran, Samantha Williams, Chris Baker, Nicole Eldridge, Lee Cochran, Julia Staley, Sheri Baker-Bruster, Kimberly Titus, Joseph Cochran, Clinton Baker, and William Staley; 10 step-grandchildren; and many great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, November 27, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at Grace Baptist Fellowship Church. Pastor Zane Brooks will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Sumner Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 from 1:00-9:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00–8:00 P.M.
A memorial has been established with the Avenue of Flags. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
