Obituary
Elaine Ruth Freeman, age 71, long time Wellington resident, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at her home.
Elaine R. (Winchell) Freeman was born on February 2, 1946 in Wellington, KS to Walter E. Winchell and Mildred M. (Long) Winchell. She was a 1964 graduate of Wellington High School and Hutchinson Community College.
Elaine married Wendell J. Freeman on October 21, 1967 in Wellington.
Elaine was an avid gardener, proud member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha service organization, and longtime crochet enthusiast. Above all, her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family and friends. She and Wendell opened the Daylight Donut Shop in Wellington, KS in August of 1980. Owning the donut Shop, where so many folks start the day and celebrate special occasions, has been a source of tremendous pride for both she and Wendell. She was a proud resident of Wellington, and thankful to have been able to raise her family here as well.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Wendell of Wellington, son, Heath Freeman and his wife Jaylene of Gardner, KS and daughters, Lori Freeman and partner Erin Shy of Austin, TX, and Debbie Sampson and her husband Ernest Sampson of Seneca, MO; sister, Janice Engelhardt of Wellington; grandchildren, Gwendolynn Sampson and Scott Sampson both of Joplin, MO, and Peyton Freeman of Gardner, KS, great grandchildren, Jakob, Andrew, Jasmine, Addison, and Reagan Sampson all of Seneca, MO.
Funeral Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. The Reverend Kendall Utt and Reverend Dr. Phyllis Provost-Saas will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, September 15, 2017 from 1:00 – 8:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M.
A memorial has been established with Heartspring in Elaine's memory in lieu of flowers. Contributions can be left at or mailed to the funeral home
