Obituary

Elna "Kathryn" Helsel, 73, of South Haven, KS, passed away Monday, April 10, 2017 at Via Christi St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita, KS.

Kathryn was born on December 10, 1943 in Blackwell, OK to Harold Francis Crow and Goldie (DeShazer) Crow. She graduated from South Haven High School and received her Bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University. She married Allan J. Helsel on February 13, 1965 at the United Methodist Church in South Haven, KS.

Kathryn taught homemaking at South High School in Wichita, KS and worked as an elementary teacher in Seoul, Korea. She was Head Start Director for Six Sandoval Indian Pueblos while living in Albuquerque, NM. Returning to South Haven, she worked as Director of Aging Projects, based in Hutchinson, KS. In 1981, Kathryn cofounded Three Feathers Associates, a non-profit organization based in Norman, OK which focuses on services to Native Americans. Until her retirement in 2012, she was a Senior Manager for both the National Indian Head Start Directors Association and the Southwest Consortium of Indian Head Start Programs. While living at home in South Haven she was an active participant in the Helsel farming operations.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; and stepmother, Veda Walker Crow.

Survivors include her husband Allan of South Haven, KS; one sister and three step-sisters: Carol (Crow) and her husband Stanley Golembeski of Hilo, HI; Judy (Walker) and her husband Charlie Arteaga of Ketchikan, AK, Jean (Walker) Alley of Phoenix, AZ and Ann (Walker) and her husband Gene Reed of Houston, TX. She is also survived by numerous near and extended family members, as well as many personal and professional friends.

Memorial Services are on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. at the Community Church in South Haven, KS. Eldon Gracy will officiate.

Main Street, South Haven, KS 67140 and National Indian Head Start Directors Association (NIHSDA – Kathryn Helsel Memorial), P. O. Box 6058, Norman, OK 73070. Contributions can be made at the church, mailed directly, or to Frank Funeral Home.
