Obituary

Elsie Weir passed away on June 7, 2021. Elsie is survived by her husband, Bob, of the home, son Steven (Kris) of Wellington, KS, daughter Sandie (deceased), daughter Susie (Grant) of Shorewood, Minnesota, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Elsie Webster was raised in Protection, KS, the daughter of Clark and Edna May Webster. She had three siblings whom she loved dearly: Murl, Atha, and Kathy.  Elsie grew up playing the flute and piano and was her church's pipe organist every Sunday. Elsie was born & raised a farm girl and took pride in telling people that she had been working ever since the day she could walk and carry a pail.

Elsie attended nurses' training at Southwestern College. Southwestern is where she met Bob Weir. They married in 1959. They soon settled in Wellington, where they both would become dedicated to that community. Elsie learned how to do a lot of things in her life, but sitting still was not one of them. Elsie had many hobbies including sewing, fishing, and anything creative or artistic. She found inspiration everywhere. Elsie was a talented cook and accomplished baker. The taste of her cakes and cookies were only rivaled by the elaborate way they were decorated. She loved DIY long before it was trendy and served as her family's personal Martha Stewart—crafting, decorating, and memory-making every holiday, party, and family event. She had a love of entertaining and a gift for hospitality. She & Bob even hosted a luau once in their backyard— complete with a roasted pig. The pair loved hosting events together. They also enjoyed dressing up each Halloween. Of course, Elsie designed and made the costumes.

When Bob & Elsie bought The Hardware Store in 1981, Elsie immersed herself into learning the lawn & garden business. To say that she had a green thumb is an understatement. She took classes from WSU and KSU and soon became a master gardener, though her design senses were completely self-taught. Elsie fell in love with water features, creating multiple ponds and waterfalls in her backyard. Soon, customers were begging her to design for them, too. Before becoming a respected business owner, Elsie was a stay at home mom and for a few years, a teacher, school secretary, and school librarian.

Elsie was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a faith-filled Christian. She served the Lord through many committees and organizations. She especially enjoyed being the Chair of the March of Dimes, a long-standing member of the Wellington park board, the Sumner County campaign manager for Attorney General Carla Stovall, and co-founding the Care & Share ministry at First UMC with her beloved sister, Kathy.

Elsie was very talented musically and creatively, but it was her kind & loving heart that drew people to her. Naturally nurturing and empathetic, Elsie turned her grief over the loss of their teenage daughter, Sandie, into a purpose as she listened and ministered to others in their time of pain and need. All of her life, she was a champion of the less fortunate and those who needed extra love & attention. Elsie and Bob cultivated a large circle of good friends who felt like family. Elsie's loving nature, hospitality, and gift for listening was a strong part of the foundation for these friendships.

No matter her accomplishments or titles, pursuits or feats, Elsie's greatest joy was being a wife, mother, and grandmother. She epitomized "unconditional love". Her legacy is one of faith, hard work, optimism, honesty, generosity, and love.

Due to Covid concerns, the family will have a private graveside service for Elsie. The family plans to have a celebration of life event in late summer or early fall where all are invited to honor the impact Elsie made.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family invites friends to contribute to "The Elsie Weir Memorial Fund." This fund will be used to purchase something for the community of Wellington, which Elsie loved.  Contributions can be mailed to or left at the funeral home.

Frank Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
