George Zavala, age 83, long time Wellington resident passed away on December 14, 2017 at Clearwater Nursing and Rehab in Clearwater, KS. Through the years George worked as an electrician for Nichols Electric and GEC.
George Zavala was born on May 9, 1934 in Wichita, KS to Juan S. Cruz and Cruz Sanchez Cruz.
George married Hortencia "Tenci" S. Sanchez on September 14, 1953 in Sain Alto, Zacatecas, Mexico. She preceded him in death in 1998.
He was a member of St. Anthony's - St. Rose Catholic Church and the Spanish Choir. He enjoyed Mexican dances, watching the Kansas City Chiefs and other NFL games, and the Wichita Shockers games. He also enjoyed going to the casino, where one day he hoped to "win big."
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hortencia; son, Ruben; great grandson, Jaxon McEachern; son-in-law, Ira Flynn; two brothers, Manuel Cruz and Freddie Araiza.
Survivors include two sons, Max Zavala of Wellington and Bernie Zavala of Wichita, KS; three daughters, Margie McGlothern and her husband Gary of Wichita, KS, Rosa Maria Flynn of Wellington, KS, and Mary Ann Zavala of Wellington; one brother, Vincent Araiza of Modesto, CA; three sisters, Irene Ruiz and her husband Augie of Los Angeles, CA, Tamasa Clark of Manteca, CA, and Mary Mendoza of Wichita, KS; 17 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Rosary will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. at St. Anthony - St. Rose Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony - St. Rose Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. Father Hung Pham will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, December 18, 2017 from 1:00 until 5:00 P.M.
A memorial has been established with St. Anthony's ¬- St. Rose Catholic Church in lieu of flowers. Contributions can be left or mailed to the funeral home.
