Helen Thornine Ewing Pomeroy, age 91, lifelong Wellington resident, passed away Wednesday morning, May 16, 2018 at Cherished Friends in Wellington, KS.
Helen was born on July 9, 1926 in Wellington, KS to Thornton R. Ewing and Eva Ruth (Baker) Ewing. She was welcomed home by her brother Bob. Even though she was a little thing she soon was working along with her family on their small homestead, milking cows, feeding chickens, gathering eggs, doing wash and learning to bake.
Helen graduated from Wellington High School with the Class of 1944. After graduation she worked as a secretary for the Welfare office and later as a secretary for the First United Methodist Church under the direction of Lester Hankins.
Helen met and married a tall handsome railroader, Fred B. Pomeroy on August 2, 1950 in her parent's home, in front of the family fireplace. Together they celebrated close to 50 years of marriage before Fred's passing in 2000.
Although together they had no children of their own they spread their love on their nieces, nephews and many others, as well as God. Fred and Helen loved to travel, going to Colorado, California, Mexico, Italy and Ireland, to name a few.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Pomeroy; parents, Thornton R. and Ruth Ewing; brother, Bob Ewing and his wife Joyce, as well as an infant brother Jack; niece, Brenda Ewing; and great nephew, Nicholas Ewing.
Survivors include nieces and nephews; Kathy Cartwright and her husband Gordon, Janette Guinn and her husband Dennis, Bruce Ewing and his wife Mary K., and Brad Ewing and his wife Paulette all of Wellington, KS; 10 great nieces and nephews and numerous great great nieces and nephews; plus a host of friends and care givers.
Funeral Services will be held at the First Methodist Church in Wellington, KS on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. Reverend Dr. Phyllis Provost-Saas will officiate the service. Interment will follow the service at the Highland Cemetery in Winfield, KS.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 from 1:00 – 8:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and the Wellington Food Bank in lieu of flowers. Contributions can be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
Frank Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
