Obituary

Hubert L. Sawyer was born on September 28, 1929 on a farm near Sedan, KS the sixth child of Jess B. and Ruth E. (Gilstrap) Sawyer. He went to heaven on March 25, 2017 at the age of 87.

Sawyer was graduated from Greeley County High School, Tribune, KS in May 1947 and attended Baca Powers Junior College at Lamar, Colorado until December 1, 1948 when he joined the United States Air Force and spent four years working in the Pentagon in the machine accounting department. He spent two years at Holly Sugar Corp. in Colorado Springs, CO in the machine accounting department before moving to Wellington in 1954 to work at the First National Bank, retiring as Executive Vice-President in 1979, after 25 years service.

He married Sherre Harrod on January 10, 1979, and together they pursued his real love of accounting. He had an accounting business while working at the bank, so he became a financial consultant and accountant for several medical offices.

One of the Doctors was Shelby Rose, M.D. a pathologist in Wichita. He and Shelby became the best of friends and enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, golfing and flying in much of the United States and Canada until Shelby went to heaven in 1995.

Hubert served many organizations including the Wichita Chapter of BAI as President, as a member of the board of directors of Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Wellington Industrial Development Corporation and Tom Schwinn Post #90 of the American Legion, also Finance Officer, Adjutant and Commander of the American Legion. He coached the First National Bank Little League Baseball team for several years.

Hubert was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served as
Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Treasurer, Finance Committee Chairman, Staff and Parish Committee, Administrative Board and Treasurer of the Building and Grounds Maintenance Trust Fund.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting, golfing, boating, flying, model trains, gardening, woodworking and build and flying model airplanes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Michael and Gregory; two brothers, John and Derrell;
and two sisters, Ruby and Charlene.

He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Sherre of Wellington; sons, Randall and his wife Janell of Wichita, Joel Blake and his wife Karen of Lakeway, TX; daughter, Kacy of Wichita; three granddaughters, Stacey, Linsay and Katie; four grandsons, Brent, Kevin, Matthew and Daniel; brothers, Clarence of Tribune, KS and Roy of Willows, CA.

In honoring Hub's wishes, cremation has taken place. No services are scheduled.

Memorials have been established in Hub's memory with Worden Park and the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
