Iris Darlene Whitley, age 92, life time resident of Sumner County, passed away Monday morning, May 30, 2016 at Medical Lodge of Oxford, KS. Iris was a homemaker.
Iris Darlene (Knox) Whitley was born on February 23, 1924 in South Haven, KS to Clarence Knox and Gretchen (Ramsey) Knox.
She married Ernest E. Whitley on February 28, 1942 in South Haven, KS. He preceded her in death in 2004. They had lived in the Wellington area for 70 years.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, attending church and its various functions, making baby quilts, and caring for her cats.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest; two brothers, Richard and Kendall Knox; and one sister, Mary Howsden.
Survivors include three sons, Richard (Dorothy) Whitley of Oklahoma City, OK, John (Rhonda) Whitley of Albuquerque, NM, David (Deanna) Whitley of Stillwater, OK, and one daughter, Janice (Leon) Shoemaker of Wellington, KS; brother, John Knox; and sisters, Jean Staggs and Judy Daub; 11 grandchildren, Cynthia (Robert) Timberlake, Tamera (Byron) Newberry, Sandi Shoemaker, Brad (Trisha) Whitley, Suzanne Shoemaker, Scott (Angie) Whitley, Steven (Jama) Shoemaker, Joseph Barry Whitley, Dixon (Marce) Whitley, Staci Booker, Rebecca (Joseph) Mulcahy; and 18 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at the Wellington Church of Christ on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 10:30 A.M. Mr. Michael Nelson will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Sumner Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 from 1:00 – 8:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions can be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
