Jack Whitney "Poppy" Smith, age 87, lifetime Wellington resident, passed away August 9, 2021 at Botkin Care & Rehab in Wellington, KS. He was a retired Conductor for the Santa Fe Railroad.
Jack was born on February 8, 1934 in Norton, KS to Nova Franklin Smith and Lenora (Powers) Smith. He was a Wellington High School graduate with the Class of 1952 and also a graduate of Cowley County Community College in 1960. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1953-1956.
Jack married Laura Rose Keithline on February 2, 1957 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Atchison, KS.
Jack was a member of the St. Anthony/St. Rose Catholic Church, United Transportation Union (UTU), BPOE, and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Kathryn Ann Powers-Smith.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Rosie Smith of Wellington; five children, Andrew W. Smith and his wife Margaret of Leawood, KS, Bradford L. "Bazie" Smith and his wife Valerie of Apple Valley, CA, Cary P. Smith and his wife Tara of Bedford, TX, Danny P. Smith and his wife Cassandra of Wellington, KS, and Evonna J. "Sissy" Nichols and her husband Scott of Wichita, KS; 12 grandchildren, Kyle Smith, Randon Harvey, Carley Smith, Morgan Arriola and her husband Victor, Hayden Smith and his wife Zuleyka, Taylor Smith, Garrett Smith and his wife Kelsey, Ross Nichols and his wife Caroline, Elizabeth Smith, Ashden Smith, McKlaine Nichols, and Jackson Nichols; 7 great grandchildren, Evelyn Hinton, Benjamin Smith, Ellis Arriola, Julian Arriola, Ryan Smith, Otto Nichols, and Sawyer Smith.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 9:30 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 10:00 A.M. both at St. Anthony/St. Rose Catholic Church on Friday, August 20, 2021. Father Mike Maybrier will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, August 19, 2021 from 1:00 – 7:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M.
Memorials have been established with St. Anthony/St. Rose Catholic Church and Good Shepherd Hospice. Contributions can be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and aides at Botkin Care & Rehab, Good Shepherd Hospice, Debbie Atchley, and Baylee & Skyler Struble.
