Bertha Jeniece Gaines, age 92, of Wellington, KS, passed away Friday afternoon, July 10, 2015 at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington. She had been a resident of Wellington since 1988. She was a retired school teacher having taught school in Texas and New Mexico for 20 years.

Bertha Jeniece (Harlin) Gaines was born on August 16, 1922 in Plainview, TX to John Silas Harlin and Fannie (Phillips) Harlin. She was a graduate of West Texas A & M University formerly West Texas State University earning B.A. and M.Ed. degrees.

She married Harry H. Gaines, Jr. on May 27, 1959 in Roswell, NM. He preceded her in death in August of 2002.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her son, Harold Gaines and his wife Nancy Hoagland of Wellington; brother, Bobby Harlin of Ash Grove, MO; sister, Frances Berniece McCully of Ash Grove, MO; and two grandchildren, Zia and Hayden Gaines.

Graveside Services will be held at Sumner Memorial Gardens on July 14, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. Pastor Francis L. Hoagland will officiate.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, July 13, 2015 from 1:00 – 8:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 – 7:00 P.M.

Jeniece was a breast cancer survivor of 54 years. A memorial has been established with "Susan G. Komen." Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
