Jewel Knisely, 93, of Wellington, Kansas passed away Saturday, December 14, 2013. Jewel LaFever was born May 31, 1920 in Coldwater, Kansas to Jack and Sarah Elliott LaFever. Jewel grew up in Sumner County. She met Ralph Knisely on a blind date.
On July 18, 1938, Ralph and Jewel took a road trip to Colorado and stopped in Syracuse, Kansas to get married. When Ralph's dad died, Ralph and Jewel took over the family farm near Perth, Kansas where they lived and farmed for 50+ years. Jewel was in charge of the yard and she kept all 8 acres immaculate. In the summer, Jewel could be seen daily by passers-by pulling dandelions from the yard. In 1985, they retired from farming and moved to Wellington.
Jewel loved caring for family, knitting, fishing, playing cards, farming and working in the yard. She was involved in 4-H and taught sewing. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Wellington and a woman of strong faith. Recently while in the hospital, she stated, "I've lived a good life, worked hard and I'm ready to go be with the Lord if He calls."
Jewel is survived by her children Jerry Knisely of Arcadia, Kansas, Shirley (Sara) Weiss of Wellington, Kansas, and Margaret Lowe of Caldwell, Kansas; grandchildren Sindi Allen, Kathi Langley, Sheri and Troy Combs, Rick and Linnea Knisely, Ann and Bob Morgan, Rob and Jan Wencel, Tyann and Kelly Orton; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years Ralph Knisely, parents Jack and Sarah LaFever, brother Vernon LaFever, sisters Viola Partain, Evelyn King, son-in-law Alfred Lowe and grandson Todd Lowe.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Christian Church. Pastor Don Bryant will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 from 1:00 – 8:00 P.M.
Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church or Donor's Choice. Contributions can be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
