Jimmie Lee Popplewell, age 81, long time Wellington resident, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield, KS. He worked at Boeing in Wichita, KS for several years. In 1956, he went to work for the Kansas Turnpike Authority as a toll collector and teller, he retired in 1992 after 36 years of service.
Jimmie Lee Popplewell was born August 10, 1927 to Lee (Spider) Claire and Sunshine (Gile) Popplewell in South Haven, KS. He joined the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict.
Jimmie Lee Popplewell married Betty J. Yearout on August 1, 1952 in Wellington, KS.
Jim enjoyed spending time with his family and spending winters in Texas. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Midian Shrine, Scottish Rite Temple for 37 years, Sumner Masonic Lodge 203 in Caldwell, KS and was a life member of American Legion Post 90 in Wellington, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles Ray Popplewell.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Betty Popplewell of Wellington, KS; two sons, Greg A. Popplewell and his companion Paula Betz of Blackwell, OK and Charles R. Popplewell of Wellington, KS; two sisters, Geraldine Scott of Branson, MO and Peggy Slavens of Monument, CO; two grandsons, Zach Popplewell and his wife Laura of Wellington, KS and Thad Popplewell and his fiance' Sammi Sprague of Caldwell, KS; and ten great grandchildren, Dustin, Brayden, Chaz, Maddie, Sydnee, Audree, Sophee, Silas, Shelby all of Wellington, KS and Dylan Betz of Blackwell, OK.
Military Graveside Services will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in South Haven, KS on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. Chaplain Norman Reeves will officiate.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 6, 2009 from 9:00 - 9:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M.
Memorials have been established with the Avenue of Flags and the Alzheimers Association in lieu of flowers. Memorials can be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
