Kenneth Leon "Kenny" Dorsey, age 81, lifelong resident of Wellington, passed away Sunday evening, August 1, 2021 at Wellington Health and Rehab. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer from the United States Navy.
Kenneth was born on July 16, 1940 in Wellington to Sarah Opal Haskins (Shelburn) and Charles Augustas Dorsey. Kenneth's mother later married Walter Haskins.
Kenneth was known to many people in Wellington Kansas. He was an avid fisherman that fished at Hargis Creek Watershed and the dam at the Wellington Park. He enjoyed making crafts in his spare time. Carving, arrowheads, and hand sewing leather deer hides that he would tan himself in his workshop at his home. Along with many other crafts, he also enjoyed reading all types of books. He had a strong love for reading books on Native American history and culture. To many he was known as "Kenny" to some he was known as "Uncle Butch" or "Butch." You would also see him visit Dillion's on a daily basis for his fresh food.
Kenneth was a lover of animals. He had one dog named "Peppy" who was by his side fishing for many years. Before Peppy died, you would never see Kenny without his beloved dog. He also loved cats and over the years he had many with one common denominator, and that their name was "Gato." Over the years he did have one special cat that he named "Henry."
Kenneth joined the United States Navy serving this great nation and retired after 20 years of service in 1979. His job during his Navy career was as a Lithographer. While in the Navy he received numerous awards and medals for his commitment and service. He served during the Vietnam War.
He will be missed by so many close friends, neighbors, and family too numerous to mention.
He was preceded in death by his parents, many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Survivors are too numerous to label as he was part of a large family.
Military Graveside Services will be held on Friday, August 13, 2021 at Prairie Lawn Cemetery at 3:00 P.M.
A memorial has been established with the Avenue of Flags in lieu of flowers. Contributions can be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
