Obituary

Kenneth "Ken" Duain Phillips passed away on February 6, 2008 at Slate Creek Deseret Nursing Home in Wellington, KS. He was 80 years old.

Kenneth Duain Phillips was born on June 11, 1927 in Henryetta, OK to Jefferson Monroe Phillips and Vada Delcena (Rice) Phillips. He graduated from Wellsville High School in Wellsville, KS and went directly into the Navy. After one year of service, Ken came back to Kansas and attended Baker University, graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He met his loving wife, Berva Miller, while at Baker and they were married on April 18, 1948.

They moved to Wellington in 1952 and Ken went to work at Boeing as a price estimator. He was very proud of what he did and worked there for 34 ½ years. He further became involved in Boy Scouts through various roles of leadership, particularly Scoutmaster. Ken found his true passion though after he retired.

Ken's spiritual gift was giving of himself and his time. He wanted to help others any way he could. Through his work as a tireless volunteer, he became associated with many organizations. Some of his favorite past-times included being involved in Kiwanis, especially Operation Holiday; being in public education such as tutoring; working on income taxes at the Senior Citizens Center; volunteering his services at the nursing home; and doing anything that needed to be done at the church. Dishwashing was his specialty and he thoroughly enjoyed being around everyone.

Ken has been recognized innumerable times for his service and his phenomenal "can do" spirit. He will be greatly missed.

Preceding Ken in death were his parents and three brothers.

Ken is survived by his wife of 59 years, Berva Phillips of Wellington, KS; one son, David Phillips and his wife Kay of Arlington, TX; one daughter, Debra Cristy and her husband Craig of Amarillo, TX; two grandchildren, Sarah Moore and her husband Daniel of Fort Worth, TX and Shane Cristy of Amarillo, TX; one great granddaughter, Hannah Moore of Fort Worth, TX; two sisters, Vada Mae Lady of Winfield, KS and Lois Foster of Dearborn, MO. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Wellington, KS. The Reverend Brent Clayton will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Sumner Memorial Gardens.
