Obituary

Lawrence Alvin Durant, age 90, Wellington resident of Wellington since 1955, passed away Monday morning, May 18, 2020 at his home in Wellington, KS.

Lawrence was born on November 17, 1929 in St. John, KS to Robert Eugene Durant and Mildred Irene (McAllister) Durant.  He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War from October of 1948 to October of 1952.

Lawrence worked in the oil field from 1955-1962; from 1962-1974 he was a freight contractor for the Santa Fe Trail Truck Line; from 1974-1985 he unloaded piggyback trailers for the Santa Fe Railroad; from 1985-1995 he was a truck driver for GEC Welco; from 1996- 2004 he worked from U.S.D. #353. He farmed most of his adult life and retired in 2005.

He married Virginia L. Winn on April 16, 1955 in Wellington, KS. She preceded him in death in 2001.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia; two brothers, Max and Herb Durant; and baby sister, Frances Durant.

Survivors include his four children, Jim Durant and his wife Janet of Mayfield, KS, Larry Durant and his husband Brian Britton of Leawood, KS, Ann Barkley and her husband Kelly of Wellington, KS and Bill Durant and his wife Karen of Overland Park, KS; one brother, Dwyer Durant of Houston, TX; 10 grandchildren, Kristy Dekat and her husband Jay, Mike Durant, Suzie Hurst and her husband Kit, Cheryl Perkins and her husband Justin, Jeni Mains and her husband Shawn, Michelle Polvadore and her husband Kerry, Mark Durant, Josiah Barkley, Kaitlan Durant, and Dylan Durant; and 16 great grandchildren, Ethan Hurst, Brennan Cantrell, Cale Dekat, Chase Mains, Talan Cantrell, George Perkins, Olivia Mains, Hayden Hurst, Hunter Hurst, Emmalin Mains, Abigail Mains, Blake Polvadore, Rory Hurst, Isabelle Mains, Tatum Polvadore, and Charlotte Kate Mains.

Private Family Services will be held at the First Christian Church on Saturday, May 23, 2020. Pastor James Byers will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Sumner Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, May 22, 2020 from 11:00 A.M. – 7:00 P.M.

Memorials have been established with the First Christian Church and Good Shepherd Hospice. Contributions can be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
