Manuel R. Soria, 95, a Wellington resident since 1930, passed away early Wednesday morning, March 29, 2017 at his home. Manuel worked as a machinist for Plessey Midwest and was also manager at the American Legion.
Manuel was born on August 7, 1921 in Dallas, TX to Julian Soria and Estanilada (Rico) Soria. He was a graduate of Wellington High School. He joined the United States Army and served in the Philippines during WWII from June 23, 1942 – December 26, 1945.
Manuel married Savina Macias on December 21, 1946 in Wellington, KS.
Manuel was a member of the National Guard from 1947 to 1981. He served two terms as the Commander of the American Legion and also served as Commander of the Firing Squad for many years. He was also in charge of the Veteran's Day and Memorial Day programs for many years. Manuel was also instrumental in coordinating the Avenue of Flags since its inception.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jacinta Cornejo and Carmen Arebalo; and a great grandson, Michael.
Survivors include his loving wife of 70 years, Savina Soria of Wellington; two sons, Joseph Soria and his wife Lynda and Nick Soria and his wife Dana both of Wellington; four daughters, Felisa Miner and her husband Mike of Aurora, MO, Marcia Burden and her husband Mark, Candy Soria, and Melissa Evans all of Wellington; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
Rosary will be held at St. Anthony - St. Rose Catholic Church at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, April 3, 2017 immediately followed by Mass of Christian Burial. Father Hung Pham will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, April 2, 2017 from 2:00 – 8:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Manuel's name with the Avenue of Flags. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
