MayVella Washington was called from labor to reward on July 4, 2010.
MayVella (Henson) Washington was born on October 4, 1931 in Wellington, KS to Edgar and Docia Victoria (Harvey) Henson and was the third of nine children. She was a 1949 graduate of Wellington High School.
MayVella married Matthew Washington on January 17, 1959 in Wichita, KS; of this union were born four children.
At the time of her death, MayVella, was a retired school librarian with USD #353 where she was employed for 32 years. For the past six years she was a volunteer at the Wellington Community Food Bank and also served on the Board of Directors. She was a faithful lifetime member of St. James AME Church where she was the pianist for 60 years, member of the Steward Board, Sarah B. Allen Women's Missionary Society, church secretary, and many other church organizations. She was also a member of the Kansas Red Hat Society of Wellington, Clearwater, and Conway Springs, Retired Educator of USD #353, and other civic organizations.
MayVella is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Matthew; and three brothers.
She is survived by her son, Stephen Anderson of Spanaway, WA; three daughters, Cynthia Washington of Tacoma, WA, Rhonda Washington of Kansas City, MO, and Jeanette Patterson (Jeriod) of Centennial, CO; two brothers, Earl Henson and Frederick Henson both of Wichita, KS; sisters, Flora Morris (Raymond) of Denver, CO, Betty Dean (Layvosure) of Wichita, KS, Helen Williams of Wellington, KS, Peggie Menefee-Robertson (Tommy) of Wichita, KS; three grandchildren, Devonna Anderson of Phoenix, AZ, Deondre Anderson of Spanaway, WA, and Seantay Patterson of Centennial, CO; and a host of nephews and nieces.
MayVella was affectionately known as Mama May by family and friends. She was an active member of the Wellington community and will be missed by many.
Funeral Services will be held on July 10, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow the service at Sumner Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, July 9, 2010 from 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.
A memorial has been established with the St. James AME Church in lieu of flowers. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
