Melvin D. Shafer, age 76, passed away at Via Christi St. Francis Harry Hynes Hospice Unit in Wichita, KS on Tuesday, April 7, 2009. He was a retired tool maker for Cessna Aircraft.

Melvin D. Shafer was born on June 1, 1932 near Milan, KS to Clifton E. Shafer and Maude (Space) Shafer.

Melvin married Della M. Orr on May 28, 1950 in Wichita, KS.

He was an active, long-time member of the Sumner County Historical Society and Genealogical Society.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lloyd C. Shafer.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Della Shafer of Haysville, KS; one son, Clif Shafer; two daughters, Evelyn Lucas and her husband Stephen of Homestead, FL and Melissa Robb and her husband Jeff of Haysville, KS; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at the Milan Cemetery. Pastor Richard Orr will officiate. The cemetery is located about17 miles West of Wellington on the North side of Highway 160, 1 mile West of the Milan road.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, April 10, 2009 from 5:00 – 9:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with Harry Hynes Hospice and the Sumner County Historical and Genealogical Society. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
