Mercedes (Ybarra) Cornejo, age 90, loving wife, mother, grandmother and long time Wellington resident, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington, KS. She was a homemaker and through the years had worked as a nurse's aide.

Mercedes (Ybarra) Cornejo was born on August 1, 1921 in Wellington, KS to Victor Ybarra and Florentina (Hernandez) Ybarra.

Mercedes married Julian Martin Cornejo on September 17, 1941 in Wellington, KS. They lived in Wellington until 1969 when Julian was promoted to Road Master with the Santa Fe Railroad and moved to Shattuck, OK. She moved back to Wellington in 2000.

She loved spending time with her family and had the unique ability to make her children and grandchildren feel special in their own way. She also enjoyed music, dancing, cooking, and traveling.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Julian in 1998; two sons, Alfonso and Steven Cornejo; and six brothers.

Survivors include her children, Robert Cornejo and his wife Beverly of Newton, KS, Julian Cornejo of San Jose, CA, Gabriel Cornejo and his wife Christina of Yukon, OK, Marcello Cornejo of Shattuck, OK, Sarah Carrillo and her husband Bob of Winfield, KS, Rose Miller and her husband Russ of Wellington, Marcellina Shaw and her husband George of Shattuck, OK, Rosalee Bueno and her husband Perry of Spearman, TX; brothers, Paul Ybarra of Wellington and Jesse Ybarra of Udall, KS; sister, Mary Gomez of North Platt, NE; 41 grandchildren; 55 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.

Rosary will be held at St. Anthony/St. Rose Catholic Church on Friday evening, October 21, 2011 at 7:00 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. Father Lawrence Carney will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Prairie Lawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, October 21, 2011 from 9:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.
