Obituary

Oscar F. Olivas, Jr., age 75, longtime Wellington resident, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Sumner Community Hospital under the care of Good Shepherd Hospice after having a short but tough fight with liver and kidney cancer.

He was born on April 13, 1944 to Oscar F. Olivas, Sr. and Enedina (Cornejo) Olivas in Wellington, KS. After attending junior high and high school in South Haven, KS he graduated in 1963 and attended Cowley County Junior College for one and a half years. In high school he played basketball and football and in Juco he played football also. He never lost his love for sports but then started his employment search starting with brick tending and then working for AT & SF Railway for 34 plus years as a machine operator, section worker, section foreman and track rider.

He had a great love for family, extended family and friends, old cars, old stories of growing up, his Mexican heritage and for the underdogs.

He was an active member of St. Rose and later St. Anthony Churches, local Hispanic Council, Wichita Diocese Cursillo Movement, local Knights of Columbus, local Catholic prison ministry and statewide KAIROS prison ministry.

He was united in marriage to Jean Wipf for three years and then was united in marriage to Janice Johnson for 40 years this coming March after going together for seven years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Enedina; a sister, Christina; and many aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his loving wife Janice; his daughter, Kelli McGuire and her husband Kenny of Wright, Wyoming; three sons, Timothy Olivas of Minersville, PA, Alex Olivas and Manuel Olivas of Colorado Springs, CO; his brother, Roger Olivas and his wife Tina of Wellington, KS; three grandchildren, Kenna McGuire, Keyanna McGuire and Jaxston Short; great granddaughter, Luxee McGuire; and many nieces, nephews and aunts.

Rosary will be held at St.Anthony's/St. Rose Catholic Church in Wellington, KS on Friday, December 27, 2019 at 7:00 P.M.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Anthony's/St. Rose Catholic Church. Father Hung Pham will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Wellington, KS.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, December 27, 2019 from 1:00 – 5:00 P.M.

Memorials have been established with the Lord's Diner and KAIROS Prison Ministry in lieu of flowers. Contributions can be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
