Obituary

Richard (Dick) Mathias Giefer, 76, of Wellington, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away Saturday, October 18, 2008 surrounded by his family.

Richard was born April 18, 1932, in rural Wellington where he was a life-long farmer, retired dairyman and stockman.

He enjoyed playing cards, cruising the countryside with his faithful canine (Oscar). Farming with his sons, his horses and wagons, the Price is Right, spending time with family and grandchildren, and overall life in general.

He was very proud to have served his country in the Army Infantry in the Korean War from 1952-54. He was a member of the St. Anthony/St. Rose Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post 90.

He is preceded in death by his parents, B. P. and Agnes (Horsch) Giefer.

He was united in marriage to Theresa Albert on April 18, 1959 in Mt. Vernon, Kansas. They enjoyed 49 years of happiness together.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa, his sons: Jacob and wife Kate, Albert and wife Candace of Wellington; his daughters, Donna and Dale Ohl of Hutchinson, Patricia and Roger Emley of Oxford, Rosemary and Damon Jones and Annette and Brandt Hagel of Wichita, and Karen and Todd Herrington of Wellington; his brother Bernard Giefer of Wellington, CO; his sisters Elizabeth Truman of Valley Center, Kathleen McGehee of Haysville, Jane Stallbaumer and Mary Rose Rosa of Wichita, Louise Wendling of Topeka, and Teresa Biermann of Leoti. His grandchildren include: Diana, Derek, Debra and Dustin Ohl; Candace, Luke and Jesse Giefer; Jason (and his fiance' Ali Schmidt), Ashley, Karissa (and her fiance' Brady West), and Riley Emley; Ryan, Devin, Lindsey, and Samantha Jones; Lane Herrington; Austin and Chase Pfalzgraf and Nicholas and Grant Giefer; and Bianna Fleck and Kirstyn, Madisyn, and Preston Hagel.

Vigil Services will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at 7:00 P.M. and Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. both at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Interment will follow the service at Sumner Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 from 1:00 – 9:00 P.M. The family will be present to greet friends from 6:30 – 8:30 P.M. Visitation will also be held on Wednesday from 1:00 – 5:00 P.M.

Memorials have been established with the Knights of Columbus #2227 and with St. Anthony's/St. Rose building Fund. Memorials can be left at the funeral home.
