Tommie Sue Baker, age 81, formerly of Wellington, passed away Friday, February 15, 2008 at her home in Van Buren, AR.
Tommie Sue Baker was born on March 12, 1926 in Yellville, AR to Thomas V. Russell and Chloe Ruth (Doshier) Russell. She graduated from Tahlequah High School in Tahlequah, OK and received her college degree from Northeastern Oklahoma State University in Tahlequah, OK.
On August 24, 1949, she married Robert L. Baker, Jr. and taught 2nd grade while he attended dental school. In 1964, they moved to Kiowa, KS where she was active in many community organizations and worked in her husbands dental office as office manager and dental assistant. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church. Bob and Tommie lived in Kiowa, KS for 30 years. Following his retirement they moved to Wellington, KS where they spent the next 10 years.
She enjoyed gardening, working puzzles, reading, playing the piano and had a passion for golf. Following her husbands death, Tommie moved to Van Buren, AR where she lived until the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Dr. R.L. Baker, Jr.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. Bob Baker and his wife Julie of Van Buren, AR and Dr. Joe Baker and his wife Linda of Wellington, KS; two granddaughters, Amy Huster and her husband Billy of Newkirk, OK and Leigh Michele Sands and her husband Robert of Lawrence, KS; one grandson, Brett Baker of Lawrence, KS; one brother, Dr. David Russell and his wife Elenore of Pittsburg, KS , along with their three children of Chicago, IL and three grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 10:30 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Wellington, KS. Reverend Brent Clayton and Pastor Danny Ginn will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Sumner Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 from 1:00 – 9:00 P.M.
Memorials have been established with the Wellington Public Library and the Wellington After School Program. Contributions can be left or mailed to the funeral home.
