Velmeta M. Woods, age 92, passed away in Edmond, OK on Sunday, December 13, 2009 surrounded by her loving family. Velmeta had been a resident of Wellington for most of her life before moving to Edmond. She was the retired co-owner of Fishers Club.
Velmeta M. (Ping) Woods was born on December 28, 1916 in Galena, KS to Ira Ping and Lilly May (Smith) Ping.
On August 24, 1934 she married Harold L. Woods in Wichita, KS. He preceded her in death on September 15, 1990.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, and flower gardening. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Hillside Baptist Church. During World War II she was a "Rosie the Riveter" for Boeing Aircraft where she helped construct over 1,000 B-29 airplanes.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; two brothers; and five sisters.
Survivors include her two sons, Buddy Woods and his wife Kim of Rio Verde, AZ and Preston Woods and his wife Sharon of Edmond, OK; two sisters, Dorothy Bauer and her husband Myron of Wellington, KS and Alice Domke of San Antonio, TX; and four grandchildren, Candace Woods of Edmond, OK, Randy Woods and his wife Kim of Oklahoma City, OK, Scott Swanson, and Tracy Swanson and family.
Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday afternoon, December 16, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at Sumner Memorial Gardens in Wellington. Pastor Dane Massey will officiate.
A memorial has been established with Hillside Baptist Church. Contributions can be left at the funeral home.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, December 15, 2009 from 5:00 – 9:00 P.M.
